Outdoor Debris Burning

The outdoor debris burning season is determined by current weather and fuel conditions. We will notify the public when the burn season opens and closes through our website, social media, and the website Beforeyouburn.com or the Before You Burn app. 

Before burning within Crooked River Ranch, you MUST register your burn at Beforeyouburn.com or through the Before You Burn app to ensure burning is allowed under current conditions. 

The Burn info line is still available for this burning season at 541-923-4633, however, you are still required to register your burn through Beforeyouburn.com.

How To Do So:

  • Visit beforeyouburn.com or download the app on your smartphone.
  • Create a free account or log in.
  • Provide details about your burn: the location of the burn, the type of burn, the planned date of the burn and your contact information.
  • Submit your burn.
  • Get approval.
  • Once approved, make sure you burn safely.

General Requirements:

  • Failure to follow outdoor burning regulations may result in the loss of your burning privileges and/or legal consequences through local or state agencies.
  • YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR FIRE AND ANY DAMAGE THAT RESULTS FROM IT.
  • An adult must constantly attend to all fires until they are extinguished (cold to the touch).
  • All flammable vegetation MUST be cleared for a minimum of 10 feet around any outdoor burning site.
  • ABSOLUTELY NO DEBRIS BURNING AFTER SUNSET.

The following equipment MUST be on hand while burning:

  • Shovel or rake
  • A garden hose or other water source sufficient to extinguish the fire.

Burning of Yard Debris:

  • The minimum distance required from a structure is 25 feet when the pile size is 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height, or the fire is contained in a burn barrel.
  • The minimum required distance from a structure shall be 50 feet when the pile size is greater than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height.
  • If your yard debris pile exceeds 6 feet by 6 feet, you must contact the fire station during regular business hours to schedule an inspection before burning. Burn piles larger than 6 feet by 6 feet require a special permit and safety inspection.

Campfires:

  • Campfires are prohibited when the Fire Danger Rating is "Extreme", during periods of Red Flag Warnings due to hazardous fire weather, or at any other time declared by the Fire Chief or their designee.
  • Campfires and portable fire pits may only be ignited after sunset and fully extinguished (cold to the touch) when finished. 
  • Campfires shall NOT be larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. Campfires MUST maintain a distance of 25 feet from a structure.

The Fire Chief or their designee is authorized to order the extinguishment of any open burning which creates or adds to a hazardous or objectionable situation in their professional opinion. Burning that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions, or when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous, is prohibited.

Prohibited materials for all types of burning:

  • Garbage
  • Plastics, including foam cups, meat trays, and egg containers
  • Diapers
  • Wire insulation
  • Automotive bodies
  • Asphalt
  • Waste oils
  • Rubber, including tires
  • Dead animals, animal manure, animal waste
  • Foodservice waste
  • Commercial and industrial waste
  • Petroleum-treated materials/products
